Helping Hand - is a home support agency located in Kingston. Their services include homemaking, foot care, errands, respite, and more. All staff are screened and trained, as well as bonded and insured. Contact them at: 902.639.5879 or 902.696.8871.

Mayflower Health Care Services - offers a range of home care support and nursing services to seniors and their families throughout Nova Scotia, including personal care, nursing support, companionship services, housekeeping, and more.

Scotia Personnel - Province-wide referrals of private home care providers or housekeepers. 24-hr care is available. Call them at 902.422.1455

Companion / Personal Support/ Errands

Out & About Mobility - Based in Halifax, they provide customized companionship and transportation services to support clients personal healthcare, shopping, and socialization needs outside the home. Contact them at: 902.210.2269.

Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) - offers home care, personal support and community services such as a volunteer visitors program, all to enhance each client's quality of life. Food Banks

Annapolis Area Food Bank Society - For those needing food items for themselves or their care recipient.Open the 2nd 3rd  Wednesday of each month from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Tel: 902.532.5572.

Upper Room Food Bank - A community supported foodbank in Kingston. Open Monday 10:00 am to noon and Wednesday 7:00 pm-8:45 pm. Tel: 902.765.0303

Fundy Interchurch Food Bank - Provides food items for individuals and families from New Minas, Kentville, Coldbrook and Aldershot. Open Thursdays 10:30 am - 2:00 pm. Tel: 902.538.4030

Family 1st Medical - With locations throughout Nova Scotia, their mission is to provide a full range of Respiratory and Medical/Mobility products to assist all those in need.

Medic Alert, Safely Home - When someone with dementia goes missing
Medic Alert will bring them safely home.

Northwood Intouch - is a Personal Alert Service that calls for help in case of an emergency. They also have devices and sensors to help people remain independent.

Philips Lifeline - offers a number of medical alert services.

Transportation

Community Transit Nova Scotia - formerly Nova Scotia Community-Based Transportation Association, is an organization whose membership represents the disabled, seniors, the economically disadvantaged, environmental stewards, and the general public throughout Nova Scotia.  

Hope Air - is a registered, national charity that provides free flights to people who cannot afford the cost of an airline ticket to get to medical expertise or specialized medical technologies that usually exist only in larger urban centres.

Kings Point to Point Transit Society is a non-profit, community-based accessible transportation service for all residents of Eastern & Central Kings County, including seniors, those with disabilities and those in need. Contact them at: info@kppt.com or 902.281.6846.

Rural Transportation Association (RuralRides) - provides door-to-door, accessible transportation services for residents of rural Nova Scotia. Click the 'Find a Ride' tab on the website to find services in your area. Contact them at: info@ruralrides.ca

Terry Morier's Accessible Taxi Service - operates throughout Nova Scotia and other areas by request. His vehicle has the capacity to hold two wheelchairs and has a child seat and boosters. Contact Terry at:  902.476.1838 or taxivanman@hotmail.com

Travel with attendants or support persons 

Caregivers can often travel at no cost or for a reduced fee under these programs. There is an application process requiring physician certification so please make your travel plans well in advance.  In some programs, if the physician indicates that the care recipient has a "permanent condition" there is no expiry date on eligibility.  Please contact service providers for more details.

WestJet - Special or additional seating for guests with a disability
The attendant pays tax only.

Air Canada - Travel with an attendant
The attendant pays tax only.

Porter Airlines - Request for attendant seating
The attendant pays nothing.

Via Rail - Passengers requiring a support person
The attendant pays nothing
The Via Rail program also includes short trips, perhaps to Halifax or Moncton for specialist services or appointments.

Maritime Bus - Companion travel
The attendant pays nothing.
Maritime Bus requires notification signed by a physician that the care recipient requires attendant care while traveling.

Delphine de Toit Mediation Services  - Delphine du Toit is an Elder Mediator who helps caregivers and families with the difficult conversations about the care and needs of older family members who are no longer able to make decisions on their own.
