Hi Folks,

For those of you who are caregivers who also work outside the home I thought I'd remind you of some tax breaks you can get.

If the person you care for has no taxable income you can use their "non-refundable disability tax credit" to lower your taxable income.  The online form that needs to be completed is T2201.  Part of it has to be filled out by their Dr. to confirm that they are disabled but once sumbitted it does not have to be resubmitted again.  There is also a "caregivers allowance" that you can receive.

When I was first told of the "non refundable disability tax credit" I followed the steps that were needed and sumitted my forms along with a letter to Revenue Canada and they granted me the request to have my previous years taxes reaccessed.  They went so far as to go back 10 years without me even asking.  They gave me $14,000.00!!

The "caregivers allowance" is another line item on the T1 general tax form.

I realize that no all care givers can work outside the home but for those of us who have to it is nice to know that we can get some form of a tax break.
