Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this forum and I'm desperate!  I live in Ontario, but my mom (who just turned 93) lives in Glace Bay Nova Scotia.  She lives in a seniors apartment complex and has lived there for over 25 years.

My problem...mom has very little short term memory, although she takes care of herself, her hygiene, her apt all spotless.  A few weeks ago she decided to cook bacon, on a cookie sheet, in the community kitchen and not her own kitchen.  I don't know why, but it was a one time thing.  She was reported to Cape Breton Housing and they sent someone from Adult Protection Services to visit.  I spoke with them this morning and was told my mom was fine living on her own, yet it was recommended I get immediate "power of attorney".  Adult Protection closed the case; however, Cape Breton Housing is going to have my mom evicted!  Why???  Where will she live???  I can't get any help from anyone being so far away.  I'm at my wits end and struggle everyday trying to fix this.

Please, please can someone help me?

Candy
Hi Paula ...... I'm surprised that NOT ONE of your fellow Canadians has replied to your plea for information.

If this was a problem in the UK , numerous posters would have tried to assist you.

Is this Forum now dead , or should more of us from the UK try to give you a helping hand ?

Up to you !

Good Morning,

I would love to hear what is being done in the UK!  Apparently in Canada we really don't care what happens to our Seniors.  I have tried contacting members of parliament for Liberals, Conservatives and NDP...so far they have all promised to do something but none of them have come through.  That was no surprise....lots of promises, but no help.

Mom is now living with my sister in New Brunswick.  We had all of five days to rent a truck, get to Cape Breton, pack and load and move.  That's what she got for all the years she lived in this complex.  We were told if she wasn't out the Sheriff would physically remove her and put a padlock on her door.

She is so sad all of the time.  All she wants is to go back home to Cape Breton.  I'm looking for a job transfer that will take me back home and hopefully take mom with me, but of course, all of these things take time.  But for now it's one day at a time.

Thanks,
Candy
Uk wise ?

Age Concern ..... albeit a charity ..... surf into the web site to see exactly what they can do for pensioners \ senior citizens \ the elderly whatever.

http://www.ageconcern.org.uk/

On specific housing issues , Shelter UK , another charity provide expert advice , and also provide representatives to meet with unruly landlords etc.

Kindest from a damp \ cool UK !

Good Morning Paul....damp/cool?   How about snow and cold...I believe about an hour ago it was -12 c with a windchill of -17 c.

I will check the the sites.  We also have the Landlord and Tennant Act that is supposed to protect tennants and landlords; however, in the case of seniors apparently they fall under something quite different....in this case it was the provincial government who was the Landlord and if they deem a senior is at risk they can give a "five day notice to quit".  The funny thing was that after having Adult Protective Services come in and do an investigation on mom it was deemed that she was absolutely fine to continue living on her own.  They refused the report for reasons unknown to me.  Perhaps we could have fought housing, but we needed to get mom to a safe place in a hurry.

Only in Canada you say?  This is a great country....just don't get old!

Snow ? Haven't seen any white stuff for ..... 20 years ..... always likely but never does ..... winters are milder over here even though we're more northernly than habitable parts of Canada.

Seniors ? Yep , several charities around that can provide aid .... trouble is , not one of them are " A Jack of all trades " .... several may need to be involved to solve one problem.

Yep , seniors too are feeling the pinch. Guaranteed income now , in Canadian $'s , around $ 236 ( for a single person ) ..... average wage around $ 930 per week. Sound a lot ? Imagine doubling prices , then adding another 20% on top ..... welcome to the UK. Heating costs horrendous .... assume a 4 \ 5 roomed bungalow ( Canadian = single storey dwelling ? ) .... 700 square feet or so .... gas + electricity alone average around $ 1450 per annum !

Stay warm ..... even my beloved humps and fins are on their way back South ... avoiding collisions with unforeseen obstacles .... like harpoons for instance ?

Kindest
Paul
